This summer, we’re celebrating the upcoming launch of our brand-new Pizza Pilgrims book (out this October!) with something special: the Summer of Champions.
Over the next three months, we’re teaming up with three of the book’s standout champion pizzaiolos to bring you an exclusive pizza each month.
First up for July is the incredible Carlo Sammarco – one of the leading lights of Napoli’s new school pizza scene, known for crafting seasonal, colourful pizzas with serious style. Carlo grew up near Piazza Garibaldi in Napoli and fell in love with pizza aged just 13. These days, he runs a buzzing 200-seat pizzeria on the outskirts of Caserta, complete with a living moss wall and queues out the door – even in 40°C heat.
His July creation, Pizza Veloute, is a bold, summery beauty with a base of vibrant purple potato purée, topped with guanciale, creamy fior di latte and basil leaves that only grow this big in June. As Carlo puts it: “You can’t beat that.”
Everything about this pizza screams seasonality and joy. It’s rich, colourful and full of personality –just like Carlo. He updates his menu four times a year and believes that colour is just as important as flavour because, in his words, “your eyes have tastebuds.” Pizza Veloute is available for one month only – so grab a slice while you can. One champion down, two to go. The Summer of Champions has begun!
